How to Use Focus Modes to Reclaim Your Attention

Constant notifications are one of the biggest productivity killers on mobile. Both iOS and Android now include powerful built-in tools to filter out noise and help you stay in the zone — whether you're working, sleeping, or spending time with family.

This guide walks you through setting up Focus modes on iPhone and the equivalent tools on Android, step by step.

Setting Up Focus Mode on iPhone (iOS 16+)

Step 1: Open Focus Settings

Go to Settings → Focus. You'll see pre-built options like Do Not Disturb, Personal, Work, and Sleep. Tap any one to customize it, or tap the + button to create a custom Focus.

Step 2: Choose Allowed Notifications

You can allow notifications from specific people (e.g., family members) and specific apps (e.g., your calendar or a to-do app). Everyone and everything else will be silenced.

Step 3: Set Focus Filters

Under Focus Filters, you can tell apps to behave differently during a Focus. For example, Safari can limit you to certain Tab Groups, or Mail can hide certain accounts. This is a powerful feature many people overlook.

Step 4: Automate Your Focus

Tap Add Schedule to activate a Focus automatically based on time, location, or app. For example, enable Work Focus every weekday from 9am to 5pm, or activate Sleep Focus when you plug in your charger at night.

Step 5: Share Focus Status

Enable Focus Status so that contacts know you have notifications silenced, without revealing which Focus you're using. This prevents awkward misunderstandings when you don't reply quickly.

Setting Up Digital Wellbeing on Android

Step 1: Open Digital Wellbeing

Go to Settings → Digital Wellbeing & Parental Controls. The exact path varies by manufacturer (Samsung, Google Pixel, etc.), but it's typically under Settings.

Step 2: Use Focus Mode

Tap Focus Mode. Select which apps should be paused when Focus Mode is active — for example, social media, games, or shopping apps. Tap Turn On Now to activate it manually, or set a schedule.

Step 3: Set App Timers

Back in the Digital Wellbeing dashboard, you can set daily App Timers for any app. Once you hit your daily limit, the app icon will grey out and you'll need to deliberately override it to keep using it.

Step 4: Bedtime Mode

Enable Bedtime Mode to automatically silence notifications and turn the screen to grayscale at a set time each night — a subtle but effective way to discourage late-night scrolling.

Tips for Making Focus Modes Stick

  • Start with just one Focus (e.g., Work) before building out more.
  • Communicate to colleagues and family that you use Focus modes so they know to call in emergencies.
  • Review your notification settings monthly — apps often re-request permission after updates.
  • Use a simple home screen layout during Focus time to reduce visual temptation.

The Bottom Line

Both iPhone and Android give you robust, free tools to manage how and when apps can demand your attention. The key is actually setting them up — a one-time investment of about 15 minutes that pays off every single day.
